What an invoice needs in the United States
- There is no national GST or VAT in the US. Sales tax is set by each state and local area, and many states don't tax most services.
- If you do collect sales tax, show it on its own line with the rate, so your client can see what they're paying.
- A clear invoice has your business name and contact details, your client's details, a unique invoice number, the date and due date, what you did with prices, the total, and how to pay.
- Check your own state's revenue department for whether what you sell is taxable.

Frequently asked
- Do I have to charge sales tax?
- It depends on your state and on what you sell — many services aren't taxed. Leave the tax line empty if it doesn't apply to you.
- Do I need an EIN on my invoice?
- Not as a rule. Many freelancers and sole proprietors invoice without one; add it if your client asks.
- What currency does this use?
- USD, set for you. You can change it if you're invoicing a client abroad.
- Is it really free?
- Yes. Fill it in and download the PDF — no account, no watermark on the amount.
- Do you keep my invoice?
- A copy is stored encrypted for 12 months, so if you sign up with the same email it's waiting in your account. It's never sold, and you can ask us to delete it. Emailing invoices and getting paid online need an account — your first 10 invoices are free.
