What an invoice needs in Australia
- Under $1,000: your identity and ABN, the date, what you sold, the GST amount, and that the document is intended to be a tax invoice.
- $1,000 or more: also the buyer's identity or ABN.
- If a customer asks for a tax invoice you must give one within 28 days, unless the sale was $82.50 (including GST) or less.
- Only charge GST if you're registered. Registration is generally required once your GST turnover is over $75,000.

Frequently asked
- Do I need an ABN on my invoice?
- If you're registered for GST, your ABN is one of the details a tax invoice needs. Enter it in the tax number field.
- Do I have to write "Tax invoice" on it?
- The ATO says a tax invoice must make clear it is intended to be a tax invoice, so title it "Tax invoice" if you're GST registered.
- What currency and GST rate does this use?
- AUD and 10% GST, set for you. You can change either for an overseas client.
- Is it really free?
- Yes. Fill it in and download the PDF — no account, no watermark on the amount.
- Do you keep my invoice?
- A copy is stored encrypted for 12 months, so if you sign up with the same email it's waiting in your account. It's never sold, and you can ask us to delete it. Emailing invoices and getting paid online need an account — your first 10 invoices are free.
